How to clean Pokémon cards safely

A light dry clean at home is fine for everyday cards. Anything wet, abrasive or chemical is where cards get ruined. Here is the safe way, and where to stop.

Short answer: use a clean, dry microfibre cloth and gentle, straight strokes from the centre outwards. No liquids, no erasers, no sponges, no solvents. If the mark does not lift with a dry cloth, stop and get it looked at.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Take the card out of its sleeve over the flat surface.
  2. Hold it by the edges, never by the holo.
  3. Wipe the front with light, straight strokes from the centre to the edge. Do not scrub in circles.
  4. Turn the card over and do the same on the back.
  5. Check it under the light. If it is clean, sleeve it straight away.

Never use these on a card

When to stop and ask a professional

Stop if a mark does not move with a dry cloth, if the card is creased, bent or has a lifted edge, if it is a holo or full art with haze, or if the card matters to you. Those need hand work under magnification, not more rubbing.

◆ FAQ

Common questions

Can I clean a Pokémon card with water?

No. Water makes cardstock swell and warp, and can lift the print. Use a dry microfibre cloth only.

Is a magic eraser safe on Pokémon cards?

No. Melamine sponges are abrasive and remove part of the surface, which cannot be undone.

Where can I get a card professionally cleaned in Singapore?

Pokejem cleans cards by hand from 2 days. Send photos for a free assessment. See card cleaning.
